Thermodynamics Lab

Overview

Thermodynamics can be defined as a branch of physics that organizes the relation between heat and various forms of energy and describes the transformations that occur in thermal energy from one state to another state of energy and how this transformation affects matter. The thermodynamics lab offers teaching equipment for illustration of basic thermodynamics principles. The lab focuses, also, on the areas related to thermodynamics including heat engines and work transfer devices as well as boiling and condensation devices providing an understanding of the energy implications on heat transfer, phase change and the impact of temperature and pressure on these processes.

Fluid Mechanics Lab

Overview

The Fluid Mechanics laboratory provides a "hands on" environment that is crucial for developing students' understanding of theoretical concepts. The laboratory is designed to examine the properties of fluids and to conduct experiments involving both incompressible and compressible flow. The objective of this laboratory is to determine the various parameters related to fluid flow in pipes and in open channels. The basic fluid mechanics principles are the continuity equation (i.e. conservation of mass), the momentum principle (or conservation of momentum) and the energy equation. A related principle is the Bernoulli equation which derives from the motion equation.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab

Overview

Refrigeration and air conditioning lab trains students to learn the refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanisms and the methods of system operation at various operating conditions. The laboratory has been equipped with different refrigeration and air conditioning systems providing support in the field of HVAC and cooling technologies. The lab consists of many training units that cover most Refrigeration and HVAC teaching topics such as Heating, Ventilation, Basic and Advanced Air Conditioning, and Vapor Compression Refrigeration System as well as the Refrigeration System Components and Application.

Heat and Mass Transfer Lab

Overview 

Heat and Mass Transfer laboratory provides fundamental and industrial knowledge about modes of heat and mass transfer, like conduction, convection, radiation, mass transfer and their application. Heat transfer is the process by which energy in one body is communicated to another body with which it is in contact. The transfer of heat always occurs from a body with greater potential and kinetic energy to a body of lower potential and kinetic energy, in other words, from high to low temperature. The objective of these experiments is to demonstrate the principle of thermal contact resistance when two bodies of differing temperature are placed in contact with each other.

Renewable Energy Lab

overview

The Renewable Energy lab houses some essential equipment with full instrumentation to allow students to investigate the effective use of solar energy as a renewable, environmentally friendly energy source. The Solar Module is equipped with two photovoltaic modules on a tilting frame along with a measuring unit to allow students to determine the IV-characteristics of the PV modules (individually, connected series/parallel, tilted configurations). The domestic water heater with a flat collector allows students to study effect of temperature and flow rate on thermal output and efficiency of the collector. A portable artificial light source is used to illuminate the PV modules or the flat plate collector and can be used to determine the effect of radiation intensity on PV module or solar collector thermal performance. The lab is also equipped with a parabolic dish concentrator which allows practical demonstration of importance of focal point and orientation of the concentrator. A solar power system demonstrator allows student to study the different components (charge controller, invertor, etc.) and setup connections for DC and AC outputs.

Turbomachinery and Aerodynamics Lab

Overview

This lab houses a gas turbine engine, a wind power trainer and a subsonic wind tunnel with associated test models and data acquisition software. The gas turbine engine is used to investigates performance characteristics, such as specific thrust, specific fuel consumption, fuel-air ratio, etc., during operation and familiarize students with the jet engine start-up and shutdown procedures. The wind turbine trainer is composed of a wind tunnel to house different types of wind turbine models, i.e., horizontal & vertical axis and savonius wind turbines, to measure power performance curves under various load conditions. The trainer is equipped with instrumentation to measure wind speed, rpm, voltage and current which are displayed on a control unit. The subsonic wind tunnel is equipped with models and instrumentation to measure flow, pressure, boundary layer characteristics as well as forces on a variety of models

Overview

Electrical Machines Laboratory trains students to conduct experiments on different rotating electric machines, which contain direct current machines and alternating current machines. From the experiments, the student can study the characteristics of rotating electrical machines, test the machines, and measure the electrical elements of the machines. Overview

Measurement and Control Lab trains students to design, develop, and experimentally test a wide range of measurement and control systems, which include the use of hardware (myDAQ devices, sensors, actuators, electrical circuits) and software (LabVIEW, Matlab, Simulink, Multisim, EasyEDA, Arduino). The lab consists of many training units and devices that cover most mechatronics systems (Mechanical/Electrical/Computer/Control systems) covering topics such as digital and analog circuits, measurement systems and their components, embedded controllers and microcontroller-based DAQ systems, modeling and simulation of closed-loop control systems, as well as the measurement, embedded, and control Applications.

Overview

Manufacturing has gained a wide economic base in the increasingly competitive marketplace. Modern manufacturing involves making products from raw materials by various processes, machinery, and operations, following a well-organized plan for each step. The FabLab at IAU university provides access to a wide range of services, which include the following operations: 3d-printing and CAD modeling, Laser cutter machine, 5-axis CNC milling machine, Soldering station and PCB engraver machine.

Overview

The Welding Lab trains students to use various welding equipment as part of their workshop practice (ENRG307) course. The lab consists of oxy-acetylene welding, arc welding, TIG welding, plasma welding, and spot-welding equipment. The welding lab can assist with both faculty research as well as students senior design (SDP) projects.
