Course Description
This course focuses on the appropriate design of the urban environment within the sociocultural context of Saudi Arabia. The course exposes students to the vocabulary of urban design, based on the theoretical issues of: imageability, districts, nodes, edges, paths and landmarks. The associated design tasks, which may include conservation and urban renewal in the context of urban development, will concentrate on spatial organization, land use, building form and massing, circulation and parking, open spaces, pedestrian ways and activity patterns. Attempts will be made to focus on functional adequacy, space quality, articulation of spaces and forms, climatic issues and indoor and outdoor relationships, at the architectural and building design level. Special emphasis will be placed on the urban design process, methods and sustainability.
