Course Description
This course will present the following topics: the fundamentals of microbiology, morphology, metabolism, classification, identification; microbiology of air, soil, water, and foods with applications to industry, agriculture, medicine, and public health; microbial cellular structure and function, nutrition and growth dynamics, control of microbial growth, metabolism, genetics, and viruses; prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, microbial diversity, systems, ecology and symbiotic relationships. An introduction to host-microorganism interactions including pathogenesis, epidemiology and immunology will be covered as well as a discussion of the indicators of fecal contamination and the microbiology of water and wastewater treatment and reuse.
