Course Description
The evolution of Islamic architecture, starting with the Umayyad Caliphate, will be discussed. Emphasis will be given to the underlying unity of Islamic architecture among such diverse regions such as Spain in Western Europe to Indonesia in Southeast Asia. A comparison with other types of architecture from different civilizations, such as European, will be discussed in order to highlight the distinct character of Islamic architecture. The class will also cover modern times and the works of masters such as Hasan Fathi. These works will be analyzed in terms of Islamic values and modern influences.
