After a successful completion of all academic requirements, the students have to do a one-year (52 weeks) internship. This period enables the student to enhance his of her practical experience. The student spends this period in KFHU in Al Khobar and other hospitals that have been approved for training since they provide suitable training facilities to cover all objectives of the internship program.
Training includes applied clinical practice in all nursing specialities that have been studied during the four years in college. In addition, this period enables the graduate to choose two nursing specialities that meet their inclinations.
The training period lasts 12 continuous months during which the trainee remains under the supervision of the hospital nursing staff and the faculty of the College of Nursing. Training is five days per week (Sunday to Thursday). No vacation is allowed during the internship period. The concerned vice dean can consider the need for an emergency leave on the recommendation of the department to which the intern is attached, and for not more than two weeks.
Study Plan
Actual practical training period is 52 weeks, 40 hours per week, distributed as follows:
- Orientation for 2 weeks
- Surgery for 6 weeks
- Medicine for 6 weeks
- Pediatric for 8 weeks
- Nursing Management for 8 weeks
- Obstetrics and gynecology for 8 weeks
- Area of choice for 7+7 weeks
Student Learning Outcomes
Based on the College Academic Committee and National Commission for Assessment and Academic Accreditation (NCAAA) recommendations, five domains were mandated to be the standards for the undergraduate nursing program including completion of the internship year. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to be able to:
- Integrate knowledge from the arts and sciences as a basis for the nursing practice.
- Utilize the nursing process in a variety of settings to promote patient well-being.
- Apply principles of patient centered care to maintain therapeutic relationships.
- Demonstrate the ability to successfully function in the first level manager role and as a staff nurse.
- Enhance the graduate knowledge, skills and integrate what she/he has learned in providing quality nursing care.
- Maximize the intern's adjustment to their future role.
- Provide efficient nursing care for critical care patients in different settings using the nursing process.
- Perform the management functions necessary in order to provide quality care in selected units.
- Assist the nurse interns to increase their ability in the analytical assessment of situations leading to effective decision making for problem solving.
- Assist the nurse interns to further develop their written and verbal communication skills in the field of human relations with patient’s families and allied health disciplines and the community at large.
- Utilize principles and models of evidence-based practice as a basis for the delivery of high quality care.
- Apply knowledge and skills in leadership, quality improvement and safety while providing nursing care.
- Utilize professional ethics.
- Collaborate with other members of the health care team to reach health goals.
- Initiate change to improve nursing in the assigned area.
- Apply advanced technology to improve quality of care.
- Teach patients, families and when needed significant others as well as other members of the team.
- Participate in planned teaching activities such as seminars, conferences, round-table forums, etc.
- Seek opportunities for continuous growth as a person, a citizen and a professional nurse.
Evaluation of Interns
Evaluation of interns is done on a special form that records the intern’s attitudes and professional capabilities in conformity with the objective of the internship program, and the competencies expected of them at the end of each period in an assigned department.
Certification
On successful completion of the internship period, the graduate is awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and becomes eligible to practice as a qualified nurse capable of providing high quality nursing care in different working locations.
