Course Description
Theoretical Content:
Description of polymer and macromolecular compounds, main properties of macromolecular compounds, classification of macromolecular compounds and main specific reactions of these compounds; Addition polymerization, stepwise polymerization. Factors affecting polymerization reactions and average molecular weight, Coordination polymerization, Zigler-Natt Catalyst. Factors affecting mechanical properties of polymers. methods of preparation of polymers. Fiber technology; Rubber Technology, Vulcanization of rubber plastic technology, PVC industry, Effect of Stabilizers; Phenol formaldehyde resins, Novolac – Bakelite; Epoxy resins and Adhesives.
Course Objectives & Outcomes
Objectives:
- Knowing the theoretical bases of macromolecular compounds.
- Explaining the synthesis of polymers and reactions including several techniques depending on the method of polymerization.
- Knowing various reaction mechanisms of polymerization e.g. free radical, ionic, coordination and stepwise mechanisms.
- Corolating theory to the industrial use of polymers as in the manufacture of fibers, rubber and plastics
Outcomes:
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- Identify the basic of macromolecular and their properties.
- Deduce the suitable polymerization reaction mechanism.
- Identify the industrial use of various types of polymers.
- Interpret the various types of polymerization reaction mechanisms.
- Suggest and relate industrial use and applications of polymers
