This course provides an overview and introduction to the field of HCI. It introduces students to tools, techniques and resources about HCI and provides a systematic approach to design. The course increases awareness of good and poor design through observation of existing technologies and teaches the basic skills of task analysis, as well as analytic and empirical evaluation methods. The students will be acquainted with the whole design process, including: HCI in the design process, design rules, implementation support, evaluation techniques, universal support, to name a few. Relevant models and theories will also be presented, including: cognitive models, communication models, task analysis, dialog notations and design, modeling rich interaction and so on. The latter part of the course will cover alternative realities, multimedia, global information systems and the Web. Students work in a laboratory where they will practice HCI techniques through an independent, self-defined project. Students will be trained on HCI software such as: AlphaUIMS, SuperCard, ISA dialog Manager and InterMaphics.
