Course Description
This course focuses on the measurement of lung volumes indirectly [gas dilution techniques and body plethysmograph]. It also describes the measurement of pulmonary diffusing capacity using small volumes of carbon monoxide (DLco). Diagnosis of specific pulmonary disorders require that appropriate tests be performed. For example, forced expiratory volume (FEV1) may be analyzed after inhalation challenge (methacholine) or exercise to quantify airway reactivity. Finally, cardiopulmonary exercise testing allows evaluation of the heart and lungs under the conditions of increased metabolic demands.
