Course Descrition
For both the design process as well as the construction process it is important to understand the purpose and technical criteria that must be met when selecting a construction system. This course exposes the students to construction systems, conventional and industrialized. Emphasis will be given to areas of structural systems utilizing load-bearing walls, masonry, cast-in-place concrete, pre-cast concrete, pre-stressed concrete, structural steel, domes, shells and tensile systems. Special importance will be placed on the issue of sustainability and how it can be incorporated into construction. The mechanics for resisting and transmitting loads, detailing, fabrication, transportation, erection, stability, quality control and integration of services systems will also be stressed in this course.
