Course Description
Principles of Urban Design will introduce students to the history and theories of urban spatial design. A review of the various factors that influence the design of urban spaces, the different design elements used and the design processes will be a part of this course. The different approaches applied in the development of urban spaces throughout history will be discussed including: Greek, Roman, Renaissance, Islamic, Modern and Post-Modern periods. Influential urban design theories and concepts along with their applications and feasibility will be studied. An emphasis will be given to cities in the Muslim world. Also, contemporary Saudi Arabian urban and building regulations will be discussed and evaluated with reference to the course’s content.
