Course Description
This course covers the current understanding of the genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms that regulate development of animals. Embryonic development of vertebrate (mouse, chick, frog, and fish) models are covered. Formation of early body plans, cell type determination, organogenesis, morphogenesis, stem cells, cloning, and issues in human development. Gametogenesis, fertilization, blastocytes, gastrulation, organogenesis sex determination, gene regulation,Environmental effects, teratology andRegeneration and aging. The scientific and ethical issues surrounding assisted reproductive technology, cloning, and stem cell technology will also be considered.
Practical Contents
Students will increase proficiency in many basic laboratory techniques including: preparing solutions, preparing samples for observation with light and fluorescent microscopy, performing RNA interference, and conducting basic bioinformatics analysis. Histology of reproductive organs (testes and ovaries) embryonic stem cell culture and differentiation.
Course Objectives & Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply basic concepts concerning the genetic and cellular basis of development.
- Identify, comprehend, and discuss primary literature in the field of developmental biology.
- Develop hypotheses concerning the cellular basis of developmental events and design experiments to test them.
- Strengthen skills in presenting students toGain increased proficiency in many basic laboratory techniques.
