Oral Skills for Scientific English

Course Description

Contents:
Oral Skills for Scientific English is a three-credit hour course for students enrolled in the College of Science. It is one of two courses designed to help students learn the craft of oral communication in English for the sciences. Students will hone their listening comprehension skills and will learn to make effective oral presentations.

Course Objectives & Outcomes
Objectives:

• To prepare students for the comprehension of lectures.
• To enable students to make suggestions in group work.
• To enable students to incorporate academic vocabulary in their oral expressions.
• To help students introduce presentation more academically
• To help them evaluate and summarize what has been said in the passage.

Outcomes:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

• Listen for verbal cues on emphasis, contrast, and for tone.
•  Identify the salient points of lectures and take notes.
• Communicate in a group.
•  Prepare a short speech on an academic subject without using visual aids.
•  Prepare an oral presentation using visual aids on a scientific topic.
