Course Description
The true essence of bioremediation is to provide a favourable environment for naturally occurring microorganisms to degrade pollutants. If pollutants are susceptible to biodegradation, they are sufficiently bioavailable, and if certain environmental conditions can be provided, bioremediation outcompetes other clean-up strategies such as physical chemical methods. In this course, bioremediation of sites contaminated with hazardous organic pollutants is introduced, and includes site characterization, waste containment, and the analysis of remediation alternatives.
Course Objectives & Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Gain the knowledge to reduce the concentration of pollutants – especially heavy metals and pesticides – by plant growth and the application of micro-organisms.
- Integrate the basic principles of microbiology required for understanding the biodegradation of hazardous and toxic organic compounds.
- Know the current biological remediation techniques to solve pollution problems.
