Course Description
This is a one semester clinical course in the first semester of the 4th Year. It will be the students second course in oral and maxillofacial surgery, following successful completion of the 3rd year course Applied surgical anatomy, local anesthesia and exodontia course. It consists of didactic and practical components. The didactic component covers theoretical aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery while the clinical component will give the students opportunities of local anesthesia, and simple exodontia.
The course along with the other two courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery will serve as a foundation course for those students who intend to pursue specialist training or residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Main Objectives
The aim of this course is to enable students to perform patient examination, formulate a treatment plan, and perform local anaesthesia, and simple extraction. The students will be introduced to the principles of managing impacted teeth, cysts, dental implants, facial infections and fractures. In addition, they will learn how to display a professional behavior towards patients and all members of the dental team. The main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course are:
- Evaluate patients with various dento-alveolar problems.
- Analyze and interpret data collected from the patient’s history, clinical, radiographic and other investigations.
- Formulate a comprehensive, sequential treatment plan based on the diagnostic findings.
- Perform simple extraction of erupted teeth, and burred roots under local anaesthesia.
- Manage the most common complications, which may arise during and after dento-alveolar surgical procedures.
