Course Description
Content:
This course introduces various classes of biomaterials and their application in medicine. It provides the understanding of material bulk and surface properties, standard characterization tools. It also presents various biological responses to implanted materials.
Course Objectives & Outcomes
Objectives:
The main objective of the course is to teach the physical and biological principles that serve as the scientific basis for understanding nature of biomaterials and their interactions with biological molecules and cells employed for implantation. By the end of the course students will be able to
- List classes of biomaterials used in medicine and specific requirements.
- Understand of the concept of biocompatibility and the methods for biomaterials testing.
- Describe and explaining biomaterials surfaces and different methods of analysis.
- Understand methods for biocompatibility improvement and practical aspects of biomedical devices: sterilization, manufacturing, clinical trials and ethical issues.
- Analyse permanent and biodegradable implants by reference to case studies.
